DOJ Moves to Drop Police Reform Agreements in Minneapolis and Louisville

The U.S. Department of Justice announced it will move to withdraw consent decrees with the cities of Minneapolis and Louisville. These court-enforced agreements were established under the Biden administration following the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020.

The consent decrees aimed to address systemic civil rights violations and unconstitutional policing. Both agreements have faced delays in federal court, with the DOJ requesting multiple extensions.

Despite the DOJ’s shift, officials in both cities say they remain committed to implementing the agreed reforms, with or without federal oversight.

The DOJ also plans to close civil rights investigations into several other police departments, including those in Phoenix, Trenton, Memphis, Mount Vernon, Oklahoma City, and the Louisiana State Police. Findings of misconduct from the Biden administration will also be retracted.
