Texas executed 49-year-old Matthew Johnson on Tuesday for the 2012 killing of 76-year-old Nancy Harris, a gas station worker in Garland. Johnson was pronounced dead at 6:53 p.m. after a lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit.
Johnson, who was 36 at the time of the crime, set Harris on fire during a robbery. She died five days later. He admitted to the act, expressed deep remorse, and said he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.
In his final statement, Johnson asked for forgiveness from Harris’s family and expressed love for his own. His final appeal for a stay of execution was denied Sunday.
This was Texas’s fourth execution of 2025 and the 18th in the U.S. this year.
