The WNBA is under scrutiny following troubling allegations of racist abuse directed at Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese during the team’s lopsided 93–58 loss to the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis on Saturday. The Fever’s home opener, held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, was marred not only by the on-court tension between Reese and Caitlin Clark — which escalated into a flagrant foul on Clark and technicals for Reese and Aliyah Boston — but also by reports of racial harassment from the stands.
Though the league has clarified that its formal investigation is not focused on the physical altercation, it has confirmed that it is looking into the broader issue of fan misconduct. In a statement released Sunday, the WNBA said:
“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society. We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.”
Angel Reese Reportedly Subjected To Racist Comments From Fever Fans

According to reporting from Chloe Peterson of the Indy Star, sources close to the situation revealed that fans in the arena allegedly hurled racist comments at Reese, a former LSU standout and prominent Black woman athlete known for her unapologetic self-expression and advocacy.
In response, the Indiana Fever issued their own statement affirming cooperation with the WNBA’s investigation. Mel Raines, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, stated:
“We are aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct during yesterday’s game and we are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation. We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.”
This incident raises ongoing concerns about the unique challenges faced by Black women in professional sports — including racism, misogyny, and a double standard in public perception. As the league continues to investigate, the broader sports world is once again being called to reckon with the racial dynamics that continue to shape fan behavior and athlete treatment.
