A couple from Bonsall, California, Michelle and Kenneth Mack, were taken into custody on December 6, 2023, accused of leading a nationwide retail theft operation worth $8 million, dubbed the “California Girls.” The arrest, captured in new video footage from NBC 7 San Diego, showed the couple being handcuffed at their lavish mansion.
According to officials, the Macks’ luxurious home served as a stash house for stolen makeup from major retailers like Sephora and Ulta. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced charges against the couple in February, stating that they allegedly orchestrated the thefts with the help of seven female accomplices, paying them to steal high-demand products.
During a search of their residence, authorities found substantial quantities of stolen makeup, still in original packaging and ready for shipping. The total value of recovered products, estimated at around $400,000, contributed to a nationwide loss exceeding $7.8 million.
The Macks and their associates face a total of 140 charges, including organized retail theft, conspiracy, and grand theft. Alina Franco, one of the reported accomplices, was also arrested on the same day with stolen beauty products worth $67,000 found at her residence.
Ulta Beauty CEO Dave Kimbell condemned the couple’s actions, emphasizing the impact on multiple stores and expressing concern about the broader reach of such theft operations facilitated by modern technology.
Conservative media had previously blamed rising retail crime rates on migrants, but with the Macks’ arrest, the focus may shift. It remains to be seen whether the same energy will be maintained in blaming migrants for such crimes.
