Early voting for the May municipal elections in Dallas starts on Monday, featuring a $1.25 billion bond on the ballot.
The bond comprises 10 propositions supported by numerous city leaders, including Mayor Eric Johnson, various organizations, and Council Member Paula Blackmon.
- The majority of funds, totaling $521 million under Proposition A, are designated for street and transportation improvements, addressing issues like potholes, road repairs, and enhancing road safety.
- Proposition B allocates over $345 million for expanding and upgrading parks and recreation facilities, including improvements to the Dallas Zoo, Dallas Arboretum, Klyde Warren Park, and White Rock Lake
- Proposition C, with $52 million, aims to enhance infrastructure and storm drainage to mitigate flooding risks in neighborhoods.
- Proposition D, with over $43 million, focuses on upgrading the city’s public libraries.
- Proposition E, with over $75 million, targets repairing city-owned arts facilities and attracting visitors to the Arts District.
- Proposition F, allocating $90 million, aims to enhance public safety facilities, including a new Dallas Police Department training facility, supported by former Council Member Jennifer Staubach Gates.
- Proposition G, with $72 million, focuses on economic development and job creation.
- Proposition H, with over $26 million, aims to expand affordable housing options, although some, like Council Member Cara Mendelsohn, oppose it, citing alternative funding options.
- Proposition I, with $19 million, addresses homelessness, including funding for renovations and capacity increases at the Bridge Shelter.
- Proposition J, allocating $45 million, focuses on upgrading the city’s IT infrastructure to address technology and security issues within the city government.
The early voting period for the May 4 special election runs from April 22 to April 30.
