Dallas Muslim leader Omar Suleiman arrested during DACA protest on Capitol Hill

Dallas Muslim preacher Omar Suleiman was among several prominent Muslim and Jewish activists arrested at the U.S. Capitol on Monday while demanding protection for young immigrant “Dreamers.”

The activists were released about five hours later, Suleiman said on social media.

“I’m proud of the leaders who came out yesterday to join,” the imam wrote Tuesday on Facebook. “It was an honor to be arrested with you! I pray that millions are inspired by your leadership.”

Others arrested included Women’s March co-chair Linda Sarsour; Stosh Cotler and Jason Kimelman-Block of Jewish action group Bend the Arc; and Dawud Walid, Zahra Billoo and Nihad Awad of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) were also arrested.

More than a dozen Muslim activists had united Monday in support of legislation to protect unauthorized immigrants who were brought into the U.S. as children, commonly known as Dreamers. The group participated in civil disobedience outside the office of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.

Suleiman is president of the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research and an adjunct professor of Islamic Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. In a Facebook post Tuesday morning, Suleiman encouraged supporters to keep protesting and urging officials to take action on immigration reform.
