51 migrants found dead in back of tractor-trailer in San Antonio

At least 51 migrants were found dead in the back of a tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday, officials said Tuesday. Sixteen others — 12 adults and four children — were taken to local hospitals with heat-related injuries.

Federal law enforcement officials confirmed to News Homeland Security and Justice reporter Nicole Sganga this appears to be the deadliest human smuggling case in modern U.S. history.

During a Tuesday afternoon press conference, officials with Bexar County, Texas, which includes San Antonio, said the death toll had risen to 51. Officials said 39 men and 12 women were among the dead but some of the victims could be under 18 years old.
