Safety Concerns Heightened After Wilmer-Hutchins High School Shooting in Dallas

In the aftermath of the recent shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, the Black community in Dallas is calling for action. They want to see better protection for their youth, including stricter bag checks, more state funding, and increased support for Black students.

At a community meeting held at New Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, organized by Dallas ISD trustee Maxie Johnson, concerns were voiced just days after the shooting. Johnson, who tragically lost his own 21-year-old son to gun violence in 2019, spoke with the injured student and his mother, expressing his apologies.

The injured student, described as bright and talented, shared that the shooting wasn’t the result of an argument but rather being in the wrong crowd.

While the authorities are investigating the incident, including how the shooter bypassed the school’s metal detectors, community members are worried that current safety measures aren’t enough. They feel that schools need to do more to secure their buildings and ensure thorough bag checks.

Many at the meeting highlighted systemic issues affecting Black and brown families, like mass incarceration and bullying, which contribute to violence in schools.

Sha Brewer, a graduate of Wilmer-Hutchins, emphasized the urgency of finding solutions to make schools safer for Black students.

Despite recent legislative efforts to address school safety, such as requiring armed personnel in schools, critics argue that more funding is needed to effectively implement these measures. Some believe that the focus should shift from private school initiatives to public education and safety.

While stricter gun laws face challenges in the Texas Legislature, lawmakers like Texas Rep. Venton Jones are calling for action to address ongoing violence in communities like theirs.

“This is a call to action that says that communities like ours who have continued to experience violence — and it hasn’t stopped — enough is enough,” Jones said. “And we have to make sure that we are allocating state and local resources and attention to be able to address this problem.”
