Rep. Jasmine Crockett Did Not Advocate for Tax Exemption for Black Americans

During a recent episode of the Black Lawyers Podcast, Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) briefly touched on the topic of reparations. Despite attempts by some conservative media outlets and right-wing social media accounts to misconstrue her words, NewsOne clarifies that Crockett did not suggest that Black people should be exempt from paying taxes as a form of reparations.

Crockett explained that the notion of Black people not paying taxes was proposed by an unnamed celebrity, with Terrence Howard being the latest celebrity to spark discussion on reparations. This celebrity suggested a temporary tax exemption for Black Americans, which Crockett acknowledged as an idea worth exploring but emphasized the need for careful consideration of its implementation.

The discussion then shifted to how withholding taxes might be viewed more favorably by those opposed to direct monetary reparations. Crockett also pointed out that the poorest Black Americans contribute relatively little to the overall tax base, making the notion of a tax exemption less far-fetched than some might assume.

Expressing concern about the politicization of the reparations debate, Crockett emphasized the importance of data-driven discussions rather than relying on preconceived notions. She reiterated her belief in the moral obligation of the United States to provide reparations to descendants of enslaved people but stressed the role of the federal government in establishing policy rather than individual states.

Drawing parallels to former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who ran for governor of Florida in 2018, Crockett acknowledged the political implications of advocating for no taxation as a current officeholder. Gillum, in a mini-podcast of the Native Land Podcast focused on taxes, explained that as a former local official, he couldn’t oppose taxation, considering its role in funding public services like education, which his own children benefit from.
